History

One of the most important moments in the history of Tuoro sul Trasimeno was the battle that took place between the Roman Empire and the Carthaginians led by Hannibal. The current town was formed in the Middle Ages.

Among the religious buildings in the city is the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, built at the end of the 14th century and rebuilt in the second half of the same century to a design by Giovanni Santini. Inside the church is a beautiful fresco by the Futurism painter Gerardo Dottori created in 1949. Among the civil buildings, Campo del Sole is an open-air museum, built between 1985 and 1989, consisting of 27 column-sculptures created by the greatest contemporary sculptors.

Every year, the four districts participate in the so-called Ferragosto Toreggiano, during which numerous events take place starting with a theatrical dispute between the districts called "Lancio della sfida", followed by the "Sfilata Storica", the "Quarto gioco" (a game for women and children), and the final "Tiro del Carro", the ultimate clash for the prize. The Palio, and consequently the related initiatives such as the suggestive "Cena Storica", is inspired by the clash between Romans and Carthaginians that took place in 217 BC on the shores of Trasimeno. The most titled district is La Trasimena, which has won the victory amphora for ten editions.

Economy

Among the traditional economic activities of Tuoro sul Trasimeno are those in craftwork, such as the processing of lace.
