The territory of Troina covers an area of 168.28 km² and is part of the Nebrodi Park. It borders Cesarò and San Teodoro to the north (in the province of Messina), Cerami to the west, Bronte and Randazzo to the east (in the province of Catania), and Gagliano Castelferrato and Regalbuto to the south. The territory of Troina is predominantly mountainous, with the Muganà and San Pantheon mountains rising behind the town. The town is located at an average altitude of 1121 meters above sea level and has the largest forested area in eastern Sicily.

Climate

Troina has a cold and snowy winter climate (on average 30-40 cm of snow), while summers are warm but not scorching, with average temperatures not exceeding 30 °C.

Origins of the name

The name Troina has uncertain origins, but it is believed to derive from the ancient Greek "Tarakinae" or "Tragina". In Arab times, the center was called "Targinis". According to some sources, the term "Tragina" or "Tragena" could mean "goat breeding", becoming then "Traina" and finally Troina.

History

In 1062, the Normans liberated Troina from Arab domination and Roger I of Sicily, leader of the military expedition, proclaimed it the first capital of the County of Sicily. Troina has a long history that spans many different epochs, including Arab, Norman, and Byzantine. Today, the town is part of the club of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
