A vast and diverse territory
Triora's territory is the largest in the province of Imperia and extends mainly in the Argentina valley, but also in the Tanarello stream valley. The hamlet of Monesi di Triora is located in the Tanaro basin. The main center, Triora, is located 780 meters above sea level, on the southernmost slopes of a mountain ridge that slopes down from Saccarello Mountain (2201 m).
The territory of Triora is characterized by the presence of numerous peaks, including Fronté Mountain (2151 m) and Garlenda Peak (2141 m). Moreover, a large part of the municipality includes Lake Tenarda, which is artificial. Thanks to its altitude and relative distance from the coast, Triora enjoys a predominantly mountainous climate, with accentuated daily temperature excursions. Despite the winter cold, the village does not suffer from the valley-bottom thermal inversion effect thanks to good daytime sunshine and protection from the mountainous bastion that closes the Argentina high valley to the north.
The history of the village
According to some local historians, Triora had its origins in Roman times when the Ligurian tribe surrendered to the Roman Empire after long struggles. In the 7th century, the Church of Our Lady of Canneto was founded.
The area was subject to Saracens between the 9th and 10th centuries when they depopulated the coasts and valleys, also raiding the abbey of Taggia and the Argentina valley. However, the village of Triora was rebuilt by the Benedictine monks of the Church of St. Stephen (Genoa), who settled in Imperia in the Argentina valley, in Taggia and Villaregia (nowadays Santo Stefano al Mare).
Subsequently, Triora came under the control of the Aleramici dynasty and later that of Arduino d'Ivrea. During the Middle Ages, the village was involved in numerous conflicts between the various local lordships and suffered several invasions and looting.
However, in the 17th century, Triora became famous throughout Europe for the witch-hunt: here, many women accused of witchcraft were processed and condemned. Even today, the village is known for this sad page of its history, which has inspired literary and cinematographic works.

Today, Triora is a suggestive and tranquil village, with narrow streets and stone houses that climb the hill. The historic center is dominated by the Civic Tower, which offers a spectacular view of the valley below.
