The history of Trigolo

Trigolo in Roman Times

The city of Trigolo has an ancient history, with its first settlements dating back to Roman times during the Republican period. At that time, after the end of the Punic Wars and the definite archiving of the Carthaginian danger, the Po Valley was divided by Roman land surveyors into centuriae, and distributed to veteran soldiers and colonists who wanted to cultivate it.

The Trigolo area underwent its first centuriation between 100 and 70 BCE. It was then distributed again between 41 and 40 BCE during the Second Triumvirate. In this period, the Governorate north of Cremona was confiscated to be distributed to the pro-Caesarian war veterans. Even today, it is possible to recognize the Roman subdivision through the almost perfect roads of 711 meters per side delimited by the original Cardo and Decumanus.

The Medieval Period

The medieval period begins, as in the rest of northern Italy, in the second half of the fourth century. The town suffered the arrival of Attila's Huns and unfortunately also experienced terrible famines (especially between 451 and 453).

After various vicissitudes, a period of tranquility arrived with the rise to power of the Franks. First with Pepin the Short, and then with Charlemagne, Trigolo and the fertile surrounding territory were entrusted to Ambrogione de Trigulo, a Carolingian vassal first mentioned by his name in a parchment of 919.
