Where is Triggiano located?

Triggiano is located in the metropolitan city of Bari in Puglia, at an altitude of 60 meters above sea level. The city is characterized by the presence of the Lama San Giorgio, a watercourse that, coming from Casamassima and Rutigliano, reaches the sea near San Giorgio Bari on the coast of Bari and along its path, there are many caves. The municipal territory of Triggiano also included the coastal area of San Giorgio di Bari until the mid-1900s when it was annexed to the Municipality of Bari.

Climate

Triggiano has a typical Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot dry summers. The average temperature in inland areas is temperate, while near the Adriatic coast, the climate is influenced by the sea.

History of Triggiano

The caves of Triggiano have yielded many testimonies of settlement in the Neolithic period, while discoveries from the 3rd century BCE suggest the existence of an urban settlement. The first written mention of Triggiano dates back to 983, when Archbishop Pavone granted the parish of San Martino in "loco Triviani" to Leone, son of Argiro. The name "Triggiano" appears for the first time in a will from 1054.

Three hypotheses have been formulated about the origin of the toponym, but none of them enjoy documentary evidence. The first derives it from the Roman emperor Trajan, who promoted the construction of the Via Traiana, which crossed Puglia. The second theory suggests that "Trivianus" refers to the intersection of three roads that lead respectively to Bari, the coast, and the main road. The last theory considers that the name derives from the name of a Roman landowner named Trebius, who had properties in the area.

Conclusions

In summary, Triggiano is a small pearl of Southern Italy that deserves to be visited for its natural beauty and ancient history. If you want to discover more about Triggiano, you can visit the official website of the municipality. Thank you for reading, friends!
