Trebiciano

Welcome to Trebiciano, the district of Trieste

Welcome to Trebiciano, one of the districts of the municipality of Trieste. Located on the Karst Plateau, it is easily accessible via the Trieste Provincial Road. The district is halfway between Padriciano and Opicina and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding hills.

The history of Trebiciano

Trebiciano has a rich and varied history. In 1698, the historian Ireneo della Croce in "Historia antica e moderna, sacra e profana, della città di Trieste" indicated the locality as one of the inhabited centers by the "Chichi" (Cicci in the Istro-Romanian language) of the Trieste Karst called Tribichiano. In the 19th century, Trebiciano was often called Trebich in the municipal regulations of Trieste.

Trebiciano: history, attractions and environmental issues in Trieste.

What to see in Trebiciano

Trebiciano has many attractions that are worth a visit. If you are interested in religious architecture, do not miss the church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo. Built in 1864, it features frescoes by the famous Slovenian painter Tone Kralj. Moreover, about a kilometer and a half from the town center, there is the Abisso di Trebiciano, a 329-meter-deep cave that houses the underground river Timavo inside the Lindner cave.

The society of Trebiciano

In the Austrian census of 1911, 97.7% of the population of Trebiciano was of Slovenian mother tongue. Today, the district is still strongly influenced by Slovenian language and culture.

Getting to Trebiciano

The main access road to Trebiciano is the Sistiana-Padriciano Motorway Connection 13. Inserted in the Trieste Great Viability, it offers easy access to the district.

The environmental issue of Trebiciano

In the 1950s and 1960s, an immense landfill was managed near Trebiciano, where waste of all kinds, including toxic waste, was dumped. The area has never been remediated and is still a threat to the local ecosystem, as it is above the course of the Timavo river, and leachate from the pollutants is discharged into it, rendering the water polluted.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Trebiciano is a picturesque and fascinating district of Trieste, with a long and interesting history. It offers numerous cultural and tourist attractions, including the magnificent church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo and the impressive Abisso di Trebiciano. Let us not forget, however, the environmental issues that must be addressed to ensure a sustainable future for this beautiful area.
