Grignano: A Neighborhood in Trieste Full of History and Science

Grignano is a neighborhood located on the northern coast of Trieste, home to the famous Miramare Castle and numerous important scientific institutions, such as the Science Centre Immaginario Scientifico, the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the InterAcademy Partnership, and The World Academy of Sciences. But Grignano also has a long history rooted in the Middle Ages.

Origin of the Name and Medieval History

The name "Grignano" is said to derive from the word "(praedium) Nirginianum," meaning "land belonging to Nigrinus." The origin of the name dates back to the Middle Ages when the locality was known as Rivo S. Maria di Grignano, and there was a hospice and a small church dedicated to San Canzian. In 1627, the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built, and until 1785, there was a Franciscan convent with a church.

Furthermore, Grignano hosts the InterAcademy Partnership and The World Academy of Sciences, two important organizations that promote collaboration among scientific academies worldwide.
