Trichiana

Welcome to Trichiana, a fraction of Borgo Valbelluna

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Trichiana, a fraction of the municipality of Borgo Valbelluna, located in the province of Belluno, Veneto.

A geographical feature

Trichiana is located in the center of a plateau between the left bank of the Piave River and the Belluno Prealps. It is surrounded by the Tuora stream to the east and the Ardo to the west.

Trichiana: history and geography of a Venetian hamlet.

Origin of the name

The name Trichiana derives from ''Terkeana'', mentioned for the first time in 1172, became ''Tricana'' in 1237 and finally ''Trichiana'' in 1286. According to Giovan Battista Pellegrini the name may derive from the Latin personal name ''Tarquius'' or the Celtic personal name ''Tricco'', ''Triccus''.

The history of Trichiana

Prehistoric age

Man has inhabited this area since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the excavations carried out in the Pian Grande di Nareon. The finds found testify to a presence from the Mesolithic to the Bronze Age and suggest that the community was dedicated to agriculture.

It has also been discovered that in the recent Mesolithic period, around 6000-5500 BC, Col di Varda near Sant'Antonio Tortal was used as a passage.

Roman era

The arrival of the Romans in this area was gradual and peaceful and led to the construction of cities, roads and administrative organization, including the municipality of Belluno and Feltre in the 1st century BC.

In the disappeared church of Santa Tecla, a funerary urn dating back to the 1st century AD was found, hidden by Precellia Procura to preserve the remains of her husband Caio Durenio Secondo. This discovery suggests that the area did not belong to the municipality of Oderzo as believed, but was already in orbit around Belluno.

Conclusion

And so we have seen that Trichiana has a long history dating back to prehistoric times and continuing with the arrival of the Romans. Its geographical location and its historical heritage make it an interesting place to visit. If you are ever in the area, I recommend taking a look!
