Discovering Tricesimo

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Tricesimo, a small Italian commune in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located 12 km north of Udine. It is a place full of history, so if you are passionate about archaeology, Tricesimo is the perfect place for you!

Physical Geography

Tricesimo is located at the foot of the first moraine hills, which were formed by the ancient Tagliamento glacier. The location is enchanting: if you love nature, you can enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains and hills.

Tricesimo: history and nature between Friuli and mountains.

History

The name of Tricesimo derives from the Latin ''ad tricesimum lapidem'', which means "at the thirtieth mile". This refers to the fact that Tricesimo is located on the road that led from Aquileia to Julium Carnicum, now Zuglio, and to Noricum.

The residential nucleus of Tricesimo dates back to the Roman conquest of the 2nd century BC. Although there are traces of human presence already in prehistoric times. In fact, there have been various findings of flint and ceramic objects.

If you are passionate about archaeology, you will find the visit of the commune very interesting, as there are numerous archaeological finds to discover. A stone found near the Adorgnano hill testifies to the construction of the walls of the mansio (probably in the 1st century AD), the traces of a centuriazione and the countless tombs found in San Pelagio confirm the passage of an important ancient road and finally the names of the locations (Laipacco, Luseriacco, Fraelacco...) demonstrate a remarkable rooting of Roman colonists in the territory.

Archaeological finds suggest that the pagus of Tricesimo was inhabited continuously after the fall of the Roman Empire and throughout the early Middle Ages. It is therefore a territory of great historical value that still guards archaeological treasures to be discovered!

What to visit

If you come to Tricesimo, you cannot miss the view from the Adorgnano hill, which overlooks the center of the village. But there are also other things to see, such as the oratory of S. Pelagio, the church of S. Antonio Abate or the parish church of the Assunta.

Tricesimo has a strategic position that has favored over the centuries the influx of population, exchanges and trade, making Tricesimo one of the most important administrative and religious centers of the hilly Friuli.

In addition, the surroundings of Tricesimo are perfect for walks in nature, or for activities such as mountain biking.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Tricesimo is an enchanting place that has a lot to offer! If you are passionate about archaeology, you cannot miss the visit of the commune, but even if you love nature or sports, you will find in this territory the ideal place. I hope I have intrigued you enough to make you want to visit Tricesimo!
