Physical geography

Territory

The territory of Tricase is located in the Salento hills, characterized by modest hilly formations. Most of the territory is flat, with altitudes ranging from 0 to 135 meters above sea level. The Pliocene sands and compact Eocene limestone make up the subsoil of the municipality, while the Lucugnano fraction is famous for its clayey sands, which have favored the development of terracotta processing.

The Costa Otranto - Santa Maria di Leuca and Bosco di Tricase park, established in 2006, protects the eastern coast of Salento, characterized by high and jagged cliffs and limestone caves such as the Grotta Matrona. Here there are also the Querce Vallonea, unique trees in Western Europe, which grow only in Salento and the Balkans.

The Tricasina coast extends for about 3 km, from Torre del Sasso to the east to the Calino promontory to the west, and includes the localities of Tricase Porto and Marina Serra.

Climate

Tricase has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. Precipitation is mainly distributed in autumn and winter. The town enjoys protection from western currents thanks to the Salento hills, while autumn and winter currents from the southeast favor an increase in precipitation.

Origins of the name

The name Tricase could derive from the union of three different rural settlements that gave rise to the inhabited nucleus, but the most accredited etymology translates it as "inter casas", that is, a town born in the middle of other rural settlements.

Conclusions

Tricase is an enchanting municipality, with a unique cultural and natural heritage. It deserves to be discovered for its landscape beauties, its history and its culinary tradition based on local typical products such as fish, olive oil and fine wines. Come and visit it and let yourself be conquered by its magic!
