Paese
Paese, the Venetian town
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Paese, a Venetian town in the province of Treviso with a population of about 22,000 inhabitants. The municipal capital is located west of Treviso, while the hamlets are all to the north. The northernmost is Postioma, located between Musano di Trevignano and Merlengo di Ponzano Veneto.
Physical geography
The territory of Paese has a minimum altitude of 19 meters above sea level, located south of the capital, and a maximum altitude of 70 meters beyond Postioma, on the border with Volpago del Montello. There are no major watercourses, but there are many ditches and trenches. In addition, the Piave reclamation consortium has jurisdiction over the territory.
Origin of the name
According to Carlo Agnoletti, the name Paese derives from the term "pagensis," which indicates a place on the outskirts of a "pagus," or settlement, but it is not clear which center it referred to. Padernello, on the other hand, derives from the Latin "padus," or "poplar." Postioma, instead, refers to the Postumia road, the consular road that crosses the town. Porcellengo could derive from pig farming, or from the term "pozzolongo," which indicates a deep and wide well present in the town. Castagnole, finally, derives from the chestnut, a tree very present in the territory.
History
From the origins to the Roman period
The Paese area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, but the oldest evidence dates back to the Roman period. The presence of the Romans in Veneto was consolidated in the 2nd century BC, with the foundation of the Roman colony of Aquileia and the establishment of Cisalpine Gaul. In Paese, the most evident traces of Roman presence are the Postumia road and the organization of rural territory.
From the Middle Ages to the present day
During the Middle Ages, the territory of Paese was contested between several local lords. In 1339 it became part of the Republic of Venice, following it in historical vicissitudes until the arrival of Napoleon in 1797. In the period between the two world wars, the largest gravel quarry in Veneto was created; today the municipality is trying to requalify degraded areas.
Places of interest
In Paese, you can visit several artistic and historical monuments, including the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, the Church of San Giorgio, and Villa Grimi. I also recommend visiting the Prosecco wine cellars, present throughout the surrounding area.
Events and traditions
The municipality of Paese is very active from a cultural point of view: there are indeed several events during the year, including the Fair of San Giustino in spring and the Sagra del Petto d'Oca in autumn. In addition, every year the Prosecco festival is held, which celebrates the delicious beverage produced in the area.
Conclusions
In conclusion, Paese is a Venetian town with a rich history and a great variety of places of interest. If you want to spend a day in tranquility, visit places of artistic interest, discover local traditions, or taste good Prosecco wine, I suggest you to come to Paese!
