Geromina

La Geromina: a growing hamlet in Treviglio

La Geromina, also known as Girumina in Bergamasque dialect, is a geographic hamlet of the municipality of Treviglio, located in the northwestern part of the city. With a population of approximately 3,000 inhabitants, La Geromina is currently experiencing strong growth with numerous new buildings under construction.

The hamlet is connected to the neighboring municipality of Canonica d’Adda by the main road that crosses it. Along this road is the Gera d’Adda park. La Geromina borders to the west with the hamlet of Badalasco, belonging to the municipality of Fara Gera d’Adda, and to the north with the hamlet of Castel Cerreto, which is also part of the municipality of Treviglio. Instead, the capital is located to the south, after the territory called Villaggio.

The Geromina: Building Growth and Unique Features of a Fraction of Treviglio

Territory

The territory of La Geromina extends for about 1.42 square kilometers and is located between 127 and 134 meters above sea level. The central nucleus is located at 132 meters above sea level and is situated in the Bergamo province area of the Gera d'Adda. The slope gradually decreases moving from the north to the south and from the east to the west.

Geology and Morphology

The soil of La Geromina is alluvial plain and presents layers composed mainly of gravel, sand, and even sandstone at greater depths. After the first layer of alluvial origin, the ground presents layers of Quaternary origin (geology) Mare, Pliocene, Langhiano, Aquitanian, and finally Olocene.

The western part of the territory is crossed by a morphological terrace called Costa Trevigliese which thus divides the hamlet into two morphologically different areas: the east area where the inhabited center is located, most of La Geromina, as well as Villaggio and the nearby hamlets of Castel Cerreto and Battaglie which dates back to the Pleistocene, while a limited western portion dates back to the Holocene.

Hydrography

The territory is characterized by the presence of many ditches, including the main one called Vignola, which arises from the famous Bergamo ditch, and continues its course bathing Treviglio in the Mulina ditch of via Felice Cavallotti. The hamlet therefore presents, compared to the rest of Treviglio, a greater risk of flooding due to the presence of the Vignola upstream from the inhabited center. Such a ditch derives from the last stretch of the Brembo (river), and therefore La Geromina, while being closer to the Adda than the Brembo, is included in the hydrographic basin of the latter.

Conclusions

La Geromina is a geographically growing hamlet of the municipality of Treviglio. Despite its proximity to the city, La Geromina is still predominantly occupied by the countryside. The territory extends for about 1.42 square kilometers and presents unique geological and morphological characteristics, such as the alluvial plain soil and the presence of the morphological terrace Costa Trevigliese, which divides the hamlet into two areas. La Geromina is also characterized by the presence of numerous ditches, including the main one called Vignola, which represents a flood risk for the inhabited center. Despite this, La Geromina remains a fascinating place in continuous evolution.
