Castel Cerreto: history and nature in an agricultural village.

Origins of the name

The name of the hamlet comes from “Cerido”, the original name of this location dating back to the 14th century. The presence of an oak forest in the area then led the toponym to transform into Castel Cerreto. This indicates the presence of the Rozzone family, who had their residence here.

History

Castel Cerreto has ancient origins, dating back to Roman times. In 1539, the hamlet was founded by the Rozzone family, a noble Milanese family who already had settlements in the nearby municipality of Castel Rozzone. After the disappearance of the Rozzone family, it was the family of the counts Piazzone who took control of the hamlet. Unlike the previous lords, the Piazzone are known as great benefactors of the area.

The “Società dei Probi Contadini” is born

An important moment in the history of Castel Cerreto is the founding of the "Società dei Probi Contadini", which took place in 1901 at the behest of the Piazzoni family and Monsignore Ambrogio Portaluppi. The Society brought together farmers from Castel Cerreto and Battaglie and managed over 500 hectares of agricultural land in the area, previously owned by the Bergamo orphanage. The ownership of the land became collective and was attributed to the heads of households. The Society aimed to develop a mechanized and modern agriculture.

Among the religious buildings, the Church of San Girolamo and San Francesco is definitely worth seeing. Built on the southwestern corner of the main square, it is dedicated to Sophronius Eusebius Jerome and Francis of Assisi. The interior is of modest size but very suggestive, with three altars and a porch at the entrance, composed of four columns.
