The town of Trevico: a dive into the history of Campania

If you are looking for an authentic town where you can taste the history and beauty of Campania, Trevico is the right place for you. With its 855 inhabitants, Trevico is the highest municipality in the entire region and the oldest in the Baronia.

Physical geography: territory and climate

Located in the Campanian Apennines, Trevico is the highest town in the Baronia and the only one whose municipal seat is located above 1000 meters altitude. From its privileged position, it is possible to admire a spectacular view of the nearby Ufita valley and the Tavoliere delle Puglie from the historic center, while the slopes of the relief on which it stands are covered with dense chestnut groves.

Trevico's climate is cold and windy in winter, but fresh in summer due to its altitude. Unlike other areas of Irpinia, rainfall is relatively scarce.

Travel to Trevico: history and beauty of Campania in an ancient village.

Origins of the name

The toponym Trevico derives from the fusion of three villages (vicus in Latin) or, according to another theory, from the worship of the Goddess Trivia on that mountain.

History

Trevico has ancient origins and dates back to Roman times when it was called Trivicum. However, modern Trevico emerged in the early Middle Ages, becoming the Diocese of Trevico under the Normans. The Baronia originated in 1122 with the possessions of Riccardo filius Riccardi, who became baron of Trevico, Contra, and Flumeri.

Monuments and places of interest

In Trevico, it is possible to admire various monuments and places of interest, including the cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, built between the 5th and 6th centuries with a Greek cross plan. The church of San Nicola, dating back to the 7th century and located at the highest point of the town, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ufita valley. Another must-see is the Museum of Farming and Handicrafts where objects from the past related to the daily life of farmers and artisans of Trevico can be admired.

How to get to Trevico

Trevico is located in the province of Avellino, Campania. It can be reached by car, taking the A16 motorway Naples-Bari and exiting at Grottaminarda towards Ariano Irpino. From Ariano, Trevico can be reached via a winding but picturesque road.

Conclusions

In summary, Trevico is an ancient and suggestive village that will make you feel like you have traveled back in time. Climbing up the streets of the town means living a unique experience, immersing yourself in a magical and relaxing atmosphere. If you want to discover the beauty and history of Campania, Trevico is the ideal place for you.
