Tresigallo

Welcome to Tresigallo!

Hello everyone and welcome to the town of Tresigallo, the capital of the municipality of Tresignana in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna. With a population of about 4,400 inhabitants and located on the banks of the Po di Volano, Tresigallo is a beautiful city that encapsulates a rich history and a unique cultural heritage. In this text, I will talk about the history of Tresigallo, its foundation, and its monuments.

Foundation

The foundation of Tresigallo dates back to the Middle Ages and its church is documented at least since 1044 AD. The city gets its name from the term "transcalem" (beyond the levee), because for centuries its territory was surrounded by valleys and swamps beyond the levee that to the west of the settlement led to Finale and reached the Po at Ariano.

The territory of Tresigallo underwent many reclamation works and, in particular, it should be mentioned the one wanted by Alfonso II d'Este, which started from Tresigallo and involved many noble or upper-bourgeois Ferrarese families linked to the Este's Signoria. On these lands, peasant families were engaged in intense agricultural activities carried out in rooted autonomy. This is the life and activity described in two agriculture treaties of the enlightened Don Domenico Chendi, who for sixty years (1735-1795) was a deserving parish priest of Tresigallo.

Palaces and monuments

Tresigallo is the only city of Foundation recognized as a City of Art and thanks to its particular geometries and chromatisms, it is defined as "The Metaphysical City". The turreted palace, which in the mid-17th century in the person of Cardinal Carlo Pio of the Family of Princes Pio Di Savoia took the name of Palazzo Pio, is one of the main monuments of the city. This building was built between 1517 and 1533 by the founder of the Faruffini family, Alessandro.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, with the great Ferrarese reclamation, the peasant class developed strongly here, finding its great organizer in the young Edmondo Rossoni, a native of Tresigallo.

Merger with Formignana

Since January 1, 2019, Tresigallo has merged with the municipality of Formignana to create the new municipality of Tresignana, of which it has become the capital. Nevertheless, the city of Tresigallo remains a gem of the province of Ferrara and an example of the historical Ferrarese reclamation.

I hope this brief summary has made you love even more this beautiful city immersed in the Po Valley. Tresigallo is the ideal place for those who love history, art and culture.
