History

Trepuzzi was contested by the Roman Empire, Goths, ancient Greeks, Lombards, Normans, and was subjected to the Hohenstaufen, Angevin, Principality of Taranto, Aragonese, Ottoman Turks, Giuseppe Bonaparte, Bourbon of Naples, and House of Savoy. The first documented traces date back to 1190 when King Tancred of Lecce assigned all the villages of his county to the Bishop of Lecce. Fulgone Bello Leccese, Bishop of Lecce from 1180 or 1183 to 1200, was also a pastor of Trepuzzi after the donation. It is said that in Roman times, in a location near Sant'Angelo, there was an altar dedicated to the god Bacchus where the patricians of the nearby Lupiae gather for Bacchanals with parties, dances, revelries, orgies, and hence the name "Tripudium."

In other words, Trepuzzi has a very colorful history!
