Valsorda

Discovering Valsorda

Welcome to Valsorda, a hamlet of the Municipality of Trento located between Mattarello and Vigolo Vattaro. This small town is situated on a plateau called Dos dal Pin, overlooking the Adige valley. It is crossed by the provincial road 131, which leads to Vattaro and then to Folgaria. Today we will talk about the history and monuments that can be found in Valsorda.

The history of Valsorda

In 1866, during the Third War of Independence, a group of Garibaldini stopped in Valsorda in preparation for the battle against the Austrians. These soldiers camped a few kilometers from the village, waiting for the attack order.

Later, in 1967, the elementary schools of Valsorda were closed and the students were sent to the "Francesco Crispi" school in Trento. This change caused a decline in population in Valsorda, which began to lose its identity as an independent village.

The monuments of Valsorda

The Church of San Valentino

The main religious monument of Valsorda is the Church of San Valentino, which is also the parish church. It is located in the heart of the village and dates back to 1600. The church has a bell tower with a sail and some valuable works of art, including frescoes and the baptismal font.

The fortifications of Valsorda

Valsorda has been a border area between Italy and Austria for many years, and for this reason, there are still several military fortifications in the village. In particular, there are two batteries built by the Austrians during World War I: the Brusafer battery to the north, on the Marzola mountain, and the Doss Fornas battery to the south of the village, at the foot of Vigolana. These forts were part of the vast network of fortifications that protected the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Conclusions

Valsorda is a small village that deserves to be visited for its history and monuments. The Church of San Valentino is a wonderful work of art that will take you back in time. Moreover, the fortifications of Valsorda are a unique opportunity to learn about the history of Italian wars and their military architecture. Come and see the charm of Valsorda!
