Povo

Welcome to Povo: a district of Trento

Hello everyone! Today we'll talk about Povo, one of the districts of Trento which, besides being a beautiful geographical area, is also the municipal decentralization district number 7 of the city of Trento, in the autonomous province of Trento.

Physical geography

Povo has about 6,000 inhabitants and lies about three kilometers from the city, on the eastern hill at the foot of Mount Chegul and Mount Celva, belonging to the Marzola massif, at an altitude of around 400 meters above sea level. The village is crossed by the Salé stream, a tributary of the Fersina stream, and together with Celva, Passo del Cimirlo, Gabbiolo, Mesiano, and Oltrecastello forms the municipal decentralization district number 7 of Trento.

Povo: discover a fraction of Trento rich in history and culture.

History

Povo was an autonomous municipality until 1926 when it was abolished by the fascist regime as part of the project called "La grande Trento". The village is home to prehistoric and Roman settlements, also testified by the discovery of four inscriptions found on site. Povo is also remembered as a Lombard "arimannia". The first document mentioning Povo dates back to 1151, a canon of Graziano's decree that presents in detail the accusation of simony against Bishop Altemanno.

Monuments and places of interest

Povo is a small but rich district that houses some interesting religious architectures such as the Church of Saints Peter and Andrew and the Church of Sant'Agata in Trento.

Culture

Education

On the territory of the Povo district, there are some important research centers, including ITC-irst, a research center and scientific hub of the Bruno Kessler Foundation. There is also CoSBi (Centre for Computational and Systems Biology), a research center founded in 2003, the result of a collaboration between Microsoft Research and the University of Trento, which deals with computational biology and systems biology, and CREATE-NET, an international research center on ICT founded by Imrich Chlamtac. In addition, the GraphiTech Foundation (Centre for Advanced Computer graphics Technologies) was founded in 2002 with the aim of promoting scientific research activities in the field of computer graphics and information and communication technologies. Finally, there is the CNR, a local branch of the National Research Council, which includes the ISTC, IMEM, IFN, IBF, and INO institutes.

Schools

In the Povo district, there is a primary school and a lower secondary school (the latter is located in the Gabbiolo district). In addition, there is an important university campus located in various areas of the district, which houses the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering (DICAM) in Mesiano and the old seat of the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical, and Natural Sciences, including the Department of Mathematics (DMath), the Department of Physics (DPhys), the Department of Industrial Engineering (DII), the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI), and part of the Center for Integrated Biology (CIBio) in various buildings.

Conclusions

In short, Povo is a district of Trento rich in history, monuments, and places of interest, but above all of great cultural importance thanks to the presence of numerous research centers and academic institutions. If you haven't visited it yet, I recommend you do so as soon as possible!
