Mattarello
Mattarello: a geographical fraction south of Trento
Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Mattarello, a geographical fraction located seven kilometers south of Trento, in Italy. This village was a municipality, but it was suppressed by the fascist government for the "Great Trento" project. As of October 2017, Mattarello had 6,226 inhabitants.
The History of Mattarello
The oldest part of the village is divided into two parts: the first collected near the church and along the ancient Trento-Rovereto connection road, and the second to the south of the medieval Castle of Torre Franca. Near Mattarello are the Trento Airport and the Gianni Caproni Aeronautical Museum, both dedicated to Gianni Caproni. There is also a Mattarello station of the Brennero railway, although it is no longer in use.
The University of Mattarello
Mattarello hosts an important interdepartmental university center, which houses the new Center for Integrative Biology (CIBIO), which is focused on various scientific disciplines such as computer science, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering as tools for investigating complex biological systems in support of biology and molecular biology. In another department of the same structure, there is a functional neuroimaging laboratory of the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences at the University of Trento, equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation, including a 4 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging machine (measurement unit).
The construction of a new military base
In 2009, the construction of a new military base (commonly called the "citadel") was reportedly planned in an area of approximately 30 hectares of countryside in the locality of San Vincenzo, just next to the airport and about 40% of the project is subject to military secrecy. The structure was intended to accommodate around 1,600 professional soldiers, with an estimated cost of 400 million euros, entirely borne by the Province of Trento, a unique case in Italy. However, the plan provoked protests from residents, and on March 10, 2008, a demonstration was held with the participation of about 350 people. The municipality decided to definitively abandon the project, granting the owners the possibility to repurchase their respective agricultural lands.
Mattarello as a Deanery of the Archdiocese of Trento
Mattarello also constitutes a deanery of the Archdiocese of Trento.
The Fortified Complex of Mattarello
Near the village is the Fortified Complex of Mattarello, an Austro-Hungarian structure consisting of three fortifications: low, medium (in the locality of Doss Ròcol), and high (in the locality of Zampetta). The structure had the function of defending Trento during the Great War and has now become a park area for the locality.
This is the brief history of Mattarello, a geographical fraction south of Trento rich in history and culture. We hope that this information has been useful to you!
