Gazzadina

Gazzadina: a charming hamlet in Trento

If you're looking for a peaceful and fascinating place to spend a day, you can't miss a visit to Gazzadina, a hamlet in the municipality of Trento located north of Mount Calisio. Together with Cortesano, Gardolo di Mezzo, Meano (Trento), San Lazzaro (Trento), and Vigo Meano, it forms the second municipal decentralization district of Meano (Trento) in Trento.

The physical geography of Gazzadina

This splendid hamlet is located at an altitude of about 444 meters above sea level, and its name seems to derive from the medieval Latin ''gahagium'' ("outlawed forest"), which in turn derives from the Lombard language ''gahagi'' - to fence, to outlaw. Located on the northern slope of Mount Calisio, Gazzadina was at the center of the territory where silver was extracted in the 1200s, with the extraction activity mainly concerning argentiferous galena. In more recent times (from the late 1800s to around 1960), barite was also recovered, material that was previously discarded.

Gazzadina, a hamlet of Trento: history, nature and culture.

The history of Gazzadina

Around 1500-1600, south of the Colle di San Martino, where a fortified settlement once stood, Ca' Comuna was built. Here, the General Rule was formed, composed of all the heads of families in the area, who were recognized as "Neighbors," to discuss and make decisions regarding the "social life" of the community. The decisions were called Rules. Starting from around 1600, they were written in the Book of Rules. In January, the heads of families gathered to elect the Sindacaria, that is, the men of Rule who were responsible for administering the territory.

The Rules remained in force until around 1800, when they were abolished by the Bavarians who had occupied the territory and replaced with Municipalities. In 1881, Paolo Oss Mazzurana, who had purchased from the relatives of his mother Elisabetta Franceschini the Maso Grande, in the locality of Pra Maor, had a Renaissance-style villa built in the nearby locality of Camparta. Today the villa no longer exists as it was destroyed by a fire in 1966.

The patron saint of the town is the Madonna of Caravaggio, celebrated every year on the last weekend of May.
