It was destroyed by the Visigoths in the 5th century and by the Saracens in the 9th and 10th centuries. Treia was part of the Duchy of Camerino under the dominion of Francesco Sforza, then of the Papal State. Over time, it became an independent city, and a powerful defensive system was built, comprising three castles – Onglavina, Elce, and Cassero – its walls, and several gateways. Throughout the centuries, Treia was besieged several times and managed to defend itself thanks to its military strength and resilience. In 1790, Pope Pius VI elevated it to the rank of "city," and the ancient name of Treja was restored. Finally, after the battle of Castelfidardo, Treia was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
