Trebisacce

Trebisacce: the Bandiera Blu of the Beaches municipality

Located in the province of Cosenza, Trebisacce is a small town with about 8,593 inhabitants that overlooks the Ionian Sea. Among Italian cities, Trebisacce holds the title of Bandiera Blu delle Spiagge (Blue Flag of the Beaches) since 2015, a European recognition awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Moreover, since 2018, Trebisacce is the only municipality in Calabria to have obtained the Spighe Verdi recognition from the FEE.

Physical geography: climate and temperatures

The climate of Trebisacce is significantly influenced by the morphological nature of the plain of Sibari and the massif of Pollino. This shields the town from winds coming from the north and east. Another feature that influences the climate of Trebisacce is Mount Mostarico, which impedes the circulation of air between the mainland and the sea. Southeasterly currents, on the other hand, are protected by the Sila mountain range, while the Salento peninsula warms the air coming from the Balkans. In 2008, an exceptional meteorological event hit Trebisacce: a storm surge that caused significant damage to the Lungomare road surface and beach facilities.

Dry conditions are instead observed from June to August, with averages well below 20mm and a frequency of two days. Most of these precipitations are due to the morphology of the territory, which creates a "stau" effect.

Fiumare and torrents

Trebisacce is crossed by the Fiumara Saraceno, which separates it from the municipality of Villapiana. Moreover, there is the Torrente Pagliara, from which the homonymous hamlet takes its name.

Origins of the name

The name Trebisacce comes from the Greek word "trapezikion," which means "small table" or "board." This name refers to the geographical characteristics of the territory.

In conclusion, Trebisacce is a small town with pristine beauty overlooking the Ionian Sea. Its climate, influenced by the geography of the territory, presents pleasant temperatures and rainfall concentrated in certain months of the year. The town is crossed by the Fiumara Saraceno and Torrente Pagliara, and its name derives from the similarity of the territory to a table.
