Discovering Silvelle: a small hamlet in Trebaseleghe
Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about a small hamlet in the municipality of Trebaseleghe, in the province of Padua: Silvelle.
Physical Geography
Silvelle is located north of the municipal capital, near the border with the hamlets of Torreselle and Levada, belonging to Piombino Dese. The village extends on both banks of the Dese River, which a little further west joins with the Rio Bianco.
History
Under the Serenissima Republic of Venice, Silvelle was known for its milling activity, thanks to the four mills located on the Dese River. During the Napoleonic domination, it became an autonomous municipality, including the aforementioned hamlets of Torreselle and Levada.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Parish Church
The parish church is a Romanesque-style building built in the 13th century, with subsequent Neoclassical additions. Inside, you can admire an altar painting by Paolo Piazza (known as Cosimo da Castelfranco), dating back to the 16th century, along with other works of art.
Gumiero House
This ancient house located at the beginning of Via Ramo Silvelle still preserves traces of ancient frescoes and some shrines. It's believed to have once hosted the Dominicans of Treviso who were involved in the hydraulic reclamation of the territory.
Gumirato Mill
The Gumirato Mill is an ancient building located near the confluence of the Rio Bianco and the Dese River. The strategic position of the mill made it possible to process corn, rye, wheat, and barley. Today, although no longer in operation, the mill can still be visited during some local events.
Infrastructure and Transport
Railways
The old Treviso-Ostiglia railway once passed through the center of the village, now discontinued. The Silvelle station was built in 1941.
Sport
In 2017, Silvelle hosted the Italian Cyclo-cross Championships and in 2019 the European Cyclo-cross Championships.
