As early as the Paleolithic era, this area was inhabited, as evidenced by the discovery of flint and jasper artifacts in 1998. In Roman times, a small settlement was built in the La Costa area, on the hillside. The archaeological site, discovered in 2000, contained fragments of roof tiles, mixed pottery, and pieces of glass. In the medieval period, two castles were built in the area, now disappeared, one in Castello di Pariano and the other in the Castello locality. The latter, owned by the Rossi family of Parma, was besieged by the Terzi and destroyed by their officer Pietro da Vianino in 1405.
Bitter struggles and alliances in the land of Mamiano
Since the beginning of the 15th century, the Mamiano area was the scene of bitter struggles involving several noble families of Parma and external allies. On one side were the Rossi, Pallavicino, Sanvitale, and Correggio, Scotti, tied to the Este family, and on the other side were the Terzi of Parma, Torelli, and Fogliano, allied with the Visconti and later with the Republic of Venice. In 1403, Giacomo Terzi attacked the village of Mamiano and set fire to the houses. In 1408, the brothers Giacomo and Pier Maria I de' Rossi allied themselves with the Marquis of Ferrara Niccolò III d'Este to demand the return of several castles, including Mamiano. In 1409, Ottobuono de' Terzi was assassinated by Muzio Attendolo Sforza and Guido Torelli was arrested but released in exchange for the promise of services. Finally, in 1416, the Marquis d'Este gained control of Parma and entrusted the restitution of the castle of Pariano to the Bravi.
