Traversetolo: between geography and history of a commune in Parma.

Origins of the Name

The name Traversetolo derives from the Latin traversa or transversus, meaning "oblique". Some sources claim that the geographic position of the municipality is the reason why the name was chosen. Traversetolo is in fact transversely situated in relation to the sun. Other theories suggest that the name may derive from the Latin word transducere, meaning to cross. In this case, the name may indicate that the first inhabited nuclei of the place are on the hills of the Cevola and Guardasone fraction.

History

The Traversetolo territory has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era. During the Neolithic era, the first human settlement was created, dating back to around 4800-4700 BCE, near Torrazzo, at the gates of Traversetolo's town center. During the excavation of a supermarket, 32 buildings and 4 tombs containing objects of archaeological interest were discovered.

Roman history, in particular, played an important role in the development of Traversetolo. The village of Traversetolo, in Roman times, was founded on the banks of the Masdone river, where the city's historic center is located today. The village grew, leading to the creation of a series of small human settlements that now constitute the city of Traversetolo.

The city of Traversetolo also played an important role in the Middle Ages, when it was part of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. In the 15th century, the city was conquered by Pier Maria II de' Rossi, who declared it a fiefdom of his family.

The history of Traversetolo is very rich, and there are many places to visit and things to discover. The city is characterized by a vast artistic and cultural heritage that can be admired by walking along the streets of the historic center, from churches to sixteenth-century palaces, to medieval towers like the Tower of San Giovanni and the Tower of Cevola.

In conclusion, Traversetolo is a very interesting municipality that deserves to be visited and discovered. Its natural beauty and rich history will make your experience unique and unforgettable.
