History

Antiquity

Founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, Turin is a city with a two-thousand-year history. It was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name of Iulia Augusta Taurinorum in the 1st century BC.

Medieval period

After the Ostrogothic domination, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, before passing under the nominal sovereignty of the House of Savoy in the 11th century.

Modern age

In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. In 1720, after becoming the capital of the Marquisate of Turin, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the 19th century, it led to the Risorgimento and made Turin the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

Tourist attractions

Turin is a city that preserves many historical monuments. The city has reserves and buildings protected by UNESCO, including some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy residences in Piedmont (World Heritage Site) and the Po Hills area (Biosphere Reserve). In 2006, the city hosted the XX Winter Olympics, since 2021 (until at least 2025) the ATP Finals, and in 2022, the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Turin is an important industrial and economic center. It is the third largest Economic-Industrial Production complex in the country (along with Milan and Genoa) and is the hub of Italian automotive industry, as well as an important center of publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, wine & food, space (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion and artificial intelligence.

Physical geography

Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers, in front of the mouth of some alpine valleys: Val di Susa, which connects the city with the nearby France through the Frejus tunnels (Frejus Road Tunnel and Frejus Rail Tunnel), Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone.

Turin offers a wide range of entertainment and activities available to tourists. The city is considered one of the major centers of University, Art, Tourism, Science, and Culture in Italy. Turin is also the birthplace of some of the major symbols of "Made in Italy" in the world, including vermouth, Gianduiotto, grissini, and espresso coffee. The city hosts various events, festivals, exhibitions, and cultural and sporting events every year.
