Tramatza
La bella Tramatza: a small Sardinian town
If you are looking for a peaceful location away from the chaos of big cities, then Tramatza might be the right place for you. This charming Sardinian town is located in the province of Oristano and is populated by only 941 inhabitants, making it the ideal place to relax and discover the local culture.
Physical geography
Territory
Tramatza covers a territory of 16.66 km² and is located just 20 meters above sea level. The terrain is mainly alluvial, but there are also basaltic outcroppings due to the volcanic activity of the nearby Montiferru. The Cispiri river flows through the territory, which played an important role in the history and economy of the town. In fact, the production of reeds was highly appreciated throughout Sardinia and there were about twenty mills that used the power of the river's water.
History
Ancient presences
The territory of Tramatza has been inhabited since the Nuragic era, as evidenced by the remains of some Nuraghe and domus de janas. During the Middle Ages, it was part of the Campidano di Milis curatorship in the Giudicato di Arborea. After the fall of the giudicato in 1420, Tramatza passed under the control of the Marchesato di Oristano, to then become a domain of the Aragonese and become a feud.
Prosperity under the Flores Nurra
Around 1767, in the Savoy era, Tramatza was incorporated into the marchesato d'Arcais, a fief of the Flores Nurra, which was then redeemed in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system. From that moment on, it became a municipality administered by a mayor and a municipal council, although during the fascist period it was included in the municipality of Milis until the 1950s.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the banner of the Municipality of Tramatza were granted by a decree of the President of the Republic on 15 April 1995. The coat of arms depicts reeds, famous for their quality, and the Roman bridge that crosses the Cispiri river.
