Palermo Football Club: a history of passion and success
Palermo Football Club is one of the most beloved and followed football teams in Italy. Founded in 1900 thanks to the contribution of the English community in the city and Ignazio Majo Pagano, Palermo has earned an increasingly important place in Italian football, winning numerous titles and awards over the years.
Foundation and early years
The history of Palermo begins on November 1st, 1900, when the Anglo-Palermitan Athletic and Foot-Ball Club was founded, later renamed the Palermo Foot-Ball Club in 1907. In the early years, the team won trophies limited to teams from southern Italy. In 1915, with Italy's entry into World War I, the club stopped all activity.
From the fascist period to the Allied landing
In 1920, under the name of Unione Sportiva Palermo, the team was reborn from its ashes through one of the smaller city teams, Racing FBC, then participating in local, regional, and interregional competitions, all completely amateur. During the Palermo Football Club 1926-1927, which was also the first to see professionalism in football, through the Viareggio Charter, serious financial difficulties induced the team to withdraw from the newly requalified football scenes and then merge, in 1928, with the fellow citizens of "Vigor Palermo." At the unification of the championships in 1929, Palermo started from the First Division 1929-1930, the third level of the Italian football championship of the time. In three years, it reached Serie A and remained there for the next three seasons.
In 1941 another corporate merger took place, between Palermo and "Unione Sportiva Juventina Palermo."
Recent successes
In recent years, Palermo has achieved important successes, winning 5 Serie B titles and conquering a Coppa Italia Serie C in 1992-1993. Three times, it has also reached the Coppa Italia final, being defeated on all three occasions in 1973-1974, 1978-1979, and 2010-2011. Additionally, the team can boast five appearances in the UEFA Europa League.
Awards and rankings
The Italian Football Federation considers Palermo 18th in the rankings of sports tradition and is ranked 16th in the Serie A Eternal Table from 1929.
