Tortoreto: History, Geography, and Climate of the Abruzzese Pearl!

Territory

Tortoreto is located in Val Vibrata and overlooks the Adriatic Sea, although it is not directly bathed by the river that gives its name to the valley. The municipality borders Giulianova to the south, Alba Adriatica to the north, and the hilly area to the west with Corropoli, Sant'Omero, and Mosciano Sant'Angelo. The area is classified as having low seismicity.

The city center consists of two very different parts: Tortoreto Alta, which is located on a hill and includes the medieval village, and Tortoreto Lido, the fraction at sea level, very popular with tourists for its four-kilometer-long beach and numerous tourist activities offered.

Climate

The climate of Tortoreto is Mediterranean type, with high humidity due to the proximity to the sea. The maximum temperatures in the summer period have an average of 30°C, while the annual average is around 18°C. The annual minimum temperature is 9°C.

Origins of the name

The name Tortoreto derives from the large presence of Streptopelia turtur, or the Common Turtledove, in the area. This presence was already known since the 6th century, as recounted by Pope Gregory the Great in one of his letters.
