Welcome to the beautiful city of Tortora, located in the province of Cosenza in Calabria, Italy. With a population of approximately 5,903 inhabitants, this municipality is famous for its hilly and mountainous terrain, which occupies a large part of the Pollino National Park. On the northern slope, it borders the municipalities of Maratea and Trecchina, to the northeast with Lauria, all in Basilicata, to the east with Laino Borgo, to the south with Aieta and Praia a Mare and to the west with the Tyrrhenian Sea. Tortora is known as the northernmost municipality on the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast.

Orography

Tortora is surrounded by numerous mountains, including Monte Cifolo, Timpone Cornutello, Monte Cucuzzata di Tortora, Monte La Destra di Pizinno, Monte Rossino, Monte Rotondella, Monte Sellata, Monte Serramale and Monte Vallina. All these peaks have altitudes ranging from 745 to 1,274 metres above sea level.

Hydrography

The municipality of Tortora is crossed by the Noce river, which separates Tortora from Basilicata, and by the Fiumarella di Tortora. There is also the Ruscello di San Nicola, the springs of Malazza and Cardio, the Fontanelle, the Pisciolo, San Sago, Serramale and the Valle del Monaco. The Torrente di Pizinno covers a distance of 5 km. There is also the Ruscello di Serrapoto, which is the initial course of the Iannello stream, in the Lao river basin.

The name of the town derives from the Latin turtur, meaning "turtledove". The municipal coat of arms also depicts the Streptopelia turtur, a species of turtle dove.
