The History of Torriglia

The village of Torriglia has roots dating back to the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, Torriglia was an important center of evangelization of the Val Trebbia thanks to the presence of the Patrania Abbey. Later, from 1227, the fief passed to the Malaspina family, already lords of Lunigiana and the Riviera di Levante. In the course of the thirteenth century, the Castle of Torriglia was built by the Fieschi family to defend the village. Later, the castle passed under the control of the Republic of Genoa, but maintaining the Fieschi's investiture over the fief. Torriglia was involved in the struggle between the Guelphs and Ghibellines and was attacked by Genoa in 1432. In 1547, the fief was subjected to the Doria family, which elected it as the Marchesato of Torriglia. However, the fief was abolished in 1797 when Napoleon invaded Liguria.
