A brief history of Torricella Verzate

The toponym Torricella derives from the Latin 'turris isella', meaning isolated tower, probably due to the particular shape of the hill on which the village stands. At the beginning of the medieval era, this place was known as 'Isella', which means 'little island' in Latin.

During the Middle Ages, there was a house of the Templars in this area, called 'Santa Maria del Verzario'. After the suppression of the Templars, the Hospitallers of Saint John took possession of the building, which remained in their hands until the Napoleonic era.

Over the centuries, Torricella and Verzate were part of the Pavia dominion, belonging to the podesteria or squad of Montalto Pavese. Until the 18th century, the territory was part of the fiefdom of the Belcredi. However, in 1470 the Bosco Madio fraction was enfeoffed with Corvino San Quirico to the Arcimboldi, while the subsequent feudatories of Corvino were the Mezzabarba of Pavia, who took the title of counts of Corvino and Torricella.

During the fascist period, the municipality of Torricella was suppressed and merged with Corvino San Quirico, until its restoration after the Second World War.
