Torricella Peligna

Welcome to Torricella Peligna

Welcome to Torricella Peligna, a small town of 1352 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. We are excited to have you here to show you our beautiful town and tell you about its history.

History

According to local tradition, Torricella was founded by refugees from Juvanum, a Roman city near the town of Montenerodomo, during the Byzantine wars of the 6th century A.D. However, the first certain news dates back to the 12th century, when the town was a fief of the Orsini family and later of the counts of Manoppello and the marquises Celaia of Chieti.

During World War II, the Germans destroyed the town while retreating to the Gustav line, but Torricella was rebuilt and is now a tourist destination for mountain excursions.

The name of the town is incorrect, as are Taranta Peligna and Lama dei Peligni, as these centres are located in the eastern part of the Maiella mountain, and are bordered by the Sangro and Aventino rivers.

The Origins of Torricella

Torricella has a rich history of archaeological discoveries. During excavations, artifacts dating back to the 6th century B.C. were found. In the locality of Sant'Antonio, a tomb was found with a bronze helmet, a dagger, a collar, a spiral bracelet, four digital rings, and an iron fibula.

It is argued that there are remains of a Samnite fortification and an even older settlement, attributed to the 2nd millennium B.C., at Monte Moresco, between Torricella and Pennadomo.

The area was regularly inhabited during the Samnite era, and after the Roman conquest of the Carecini tribe that occupied the area of Juvanum, Cluviae, and Trebula di Quadri, the tribe bordered on the Sangro with the Frentani, to the east with the Lucani, to the south with the Pentri of Bovianum Vetus (Pietrabbondante), and finally with the Peligni in the eastern Maiella.

Famous People

In 1744, Torricella was the birthplace of Vincenzo Tobia Nicola Bellini, a musician who died in Catania in 1829. He was the grandfather and first teacher of the famous opera composer Vincenzo Bellini.
