Torrice

Torrice: A Longstanding History

Torrice, a municipality in the province of Frosinone in Lazio, owes its origins to the Roman era. Situated near Via Latina and Frusino, the town was already inhabited by ancient populations. Later, it became part of the ecclesiastical community of Veroli, now the diocese of Frosinone-Veroli-Ferentino.

The Power of Condomini

During the Middle Ages, bishops resolved conflicts through level, assigning lands and paying a rent. Thanks to this mechanism, some Milites acquired power and influence over the surrounding territories. And it is precisely from these Milites that the condomini who controlled Torrice from the 11th to the 12th century, until the first half of the 13th century, could originate. These condomini had judicial power, collected taxes and services, holding absolute power over the town. However, despite their presence, the town was attacked and set on fire by the pontifical soldiers of Honorius II in 1129 and by Frederick I Barbarossa's German troops in 1165.

The History of Torrice: From Ancient Rome to Banditry in the Modern Age.

Torrice in the Renaissance

In the fifteenth century, the community was under the command of the rule of the Ceccanesi, subsequently passing under Deifobo dell'Anguillara and then under other lords, such as Cardinal Francisco Mendoza Bobadilla, due to Spanish influence on the town. Despite a period of depopulation, the town quickly recovered and in the sixteenth century, it had its own statutes.

Economic Problems in the Seventeenth Century

In the seventeenth century, Torrice had to deal with serious economic problems, which were solved thanks to the deforestation of most of the territory to obtain land to cultivate and raise animals.

Brigandage in the Modern Age

After the war of Campagna, the last war fought in southern Lazio until the French invasion of 1798, the problem of brigandage arose.

Torrice is a town with a long history that tells the vicissitudes of the past and its ability to recover after difficult periods. Through its testimony, one can understand the history of an entire town and its people.
