Torresina
A picturesque hill town in Piedmont: Torresina
Have you ever been to Torresina? This small Italian town of only 48 inhabitants is located on the top of a picturesque hill with an altitude of 704 meters in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont. Despite its small size, Torresina has ancient history and has a lot to offer to visitors.
A place immersed in history
The area now surrounding Torresina was already inhabited in pre-Roman times by the "Stazielli", followed by other populations belonging to the "Gens Popillia" tribe. In the first century, the Romans arrived in this area, as evidenced by the discovery of a stele on site in 1999. In 950, the local population built a tower to defend themselves from Saracen raids, and the village that developed around that tower was called "Torricella" in honor of it.
Then the territory passed into the hands of the noble Ceva family, who ruled the town until 1635. In 1684, the feud passed to the Baron of Nus and finally, in 1797, Torresina became the scene of the clash between French troops and those of the Duchy of Savoy. The city has undergone several changes over time, even changing its name to "Torresina" in 1892.
Symbols of Torresina
The coat of arms of Torresina is described as "Azure with the tower on the right founded on the plain to the left the ruined castle (in natural) to the piece of black armor emerging from the point. Common external ornaments".
Monuments and places of interest
Among the places of interest in Torresina, there is the Church of San Giorgio, which is the main church of the town. Its Langhe stone facade is very beautiful, as well as the mosaic depicting the patron saint inside. The church has a single nave with four side chapels, where you can admire an 18th-century wooden processional crucifix and a baptismal font resting on a 15th-century capital.
Another attraction is the Chapel of Santa Croce, built in 1844 as a sign of gratitude for the end of a long famine. It was the entire population of Torresina who built the chapel, working together on holidays.
Demographic evolution
In recent years, the population of Torresina has decreased significantly, from about 200 inhabitants in 1951 to only 48 inhabitants in 2021.
Administration
Torresina was part of the Alto Tanaro Cebano Monregalese mountain community, itself an administrative community that extended to 20 municipalities in the province of Cuneo.
