Torreano

Welcome to Torreano: the Municipality between the Hills and the Julian Prealps

Hello friends, today I will tell you about Torreano, a small municipality located in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, surrounded by beautiful nature between the hills and the Julian Prealps. Torreano has a population of 2060 inhabitants and is located north of Cividale del Friuli. The municipal territory is crossed by the Chiarò stream and is home to numerous mountains, such as Joanaz, Caludranza, Klabuk, Craguenza, Mladesiena and Mount S. Lorenzo. It is worth mentioning that Torreano is an important region for the extraction of Piasentina Stone, an element that has supported the economy of Torreano since ancient times.

The History of Torreano

The name of Torreano dates back to the Middle Ages when it was known as Tauriano. The root of the name could derive from a Latin gens or be an older toponym that concerns the settlement of the Taurisci Gauls in the area. During the Middle Ages, the village of the Roman castellum of Torreano was abandoned, and the inhabitants moved downstream to the hamlet of Cragnolino, where there is an ancient village. A dispute between Torreano and Prestento was only resolved in the XX century when Torreano became its own autonomous parish. The profession of "Picapiera", the quarrymen who have worked, and still work, in the Piasentina Stone quarries, played an important role in the development and economy of Torreano.

Demographic Evolution

Torreano is composed of separate villages, which were real villages detached from each other until a century ago. This shows that the village has not grown demographically, but that the inhabitants of the mountain hamlets have moved downstream, leaving their original residences.

Languages and Dialects

The Friulian language is used by a large number of Torreano's inhabitants, along with the Italian language. The territory of Torreano is straddled between the Friulian linguistic area and the Slavic one of "Benecia", where a dialect related to the Slovene language is still widespread.

In summary, if you are looking for a corner of peace, away from the chaos of the city, visit Torreano. This little pearl offers the beauty of nature, the history, and culture of the region. We hope to see you soon in Torreano!
