History

The history of Torre de' Roveri dates back to the Roman period, as evidenced by the remains of a kiln found in the area. During the Middle Ages, the town was at the center of numerous disputes between opposing Guelph and Ghibelline factions, but after the peace of Cremona in 1440, the Serenissima Republic took over and established a period of tranquility. The Venetian domination led to the construction of irrigation works, such as the Borgogna canal, to promote local agriculture. The village became an independent municipality in 1669, thanks to the establishment of the parish of San Girolamo, thus separating from the territory of Pedrengo. In the following centuries, the noble Pasta family and then the Sforza della Torre family, who built numerous building works, including the parish church.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Torre de' Roveri consists of a banner divided in half between white and blue, with a cluster of grapes representing the local crop, a twelve-piece gear wheel symbolizing the De’ Roveri Cotton Mill, and the bell tower of the town.

Religious architecture

The parish church of San Girolamo and Natività di Maria Vergine was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the remains of the previous medieval church, with bifores and trifores in Lombard Gothic style. Adjacent to the church, the tower-like campanile is of great visual impact with its battlements.

Civil architecture

Villa Frizzoni, dating back to the 17th century and composed of three main bodies, is a very important testimony of Venetian architecture.

Demographic evolution

The demographic evolution of Torre de' Roveri experienced a significant increase between 1861 and 1929, going from 854 to 2376 inhabitants. However, in recent years, there has been a decline in population caused by the scarcity of job opportunities.

Economy

The town is famous for its agricultural and agritourism companies that offer local food products and fine wines, such as the Moscato passito di Torre de' Roveri, obtained from the autochthonous Moscato di Scanzo grape variety, and the Valcalepio white and red D.O.C. wines.

Administration

The city of Torre de' Roveri is governed by the mayor Fermo Zanetti, in office since June 2019.
