In the past, the town was called Bretta, named after the Captains of Bretta, probably Milanese, who owned properties in Brianza and Cisano. During the Venetian period, textile activity flourished, especially silk. From 1992 to 2018, Torre de' Busi was part of the province of Lecco, before returning to the province of Bergamo.
