The name Torralba derives from the Latin noun and adjective "turris" and "alba", which means "white tower". The name probably refers to the presence of white towers or castles in the surrounding territory.

For example, we find numerous Renaissance jeweller's tombs beneath the plateau of Chiesa di San Pietro di Sorres. Among the most important nuraghi, we find the Nuraghe Ruju and the Nuraghe Santu Antine complex, one of the largest and best-preserved on the island. The town was born as a settlement around the church of Santa Maria in the Middle Ages when it belonged to the Meilogu curatorship in the Giudicato of Torres. Later, it came under the domination of the Genoese Doria family and was the scene of military clashes.
