The history of Campobasso Football Club

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about a football club from Campobasso: Unione Sportiva S.S.D. Campobasso 1919 a r.l., better known as Campobasso, which currently plays in Eccellenza, the fifth division of the Italian football championship.

Origins

The history of football in Campobasso dates back to 1917, when the first Campobasso Calcio scorecard was published in the local newspaper "Il Foglietto". In May 1919, Unione Sportiva Campobasso was founded, with Mercurio Magno being one of the founders and the first president of the team. The first football field was improvised and located between Viale Elena, Via Petrella, and Via Scatolone. The first match was played on June 2 of that year among the members of the club, and the social headquarters was opened on July 23.

The history of the Campobasso football club: successes and failures.

The early years of the team

The team played its first matches with the military district and Austrian prisoners of the First World War. Until 1929, they also played friendly matches against military and nearby formations such as Isernia, Bojano and Termoli. The first championships played by the team were mostly Third and Second Division tournaments, which correspond to today's Eccellenza and Serie D championships. Meanwhile, the team moved to the stadium that would be named after Giovanni Romagnoli, a military man, for home games. The affiliation to FIGC championships came thanks to the new president, Domenico Mastropietro.

Professionalism

In 1975, Campobasso achieved professionalism, rising to Serie C2. In 1982, the team had its participation in Serie B for five consecutive seasons, which constitute the peak of the rossoblù football history. The best result achieved in this category was fifth place. In 1990, the team had its first bankruptcy. Other bankruptcies followed in 1996, 2003, 2013, and 2022.

The successes of Campobasso Football Club

The Club has an impressive list of achievements, including the conquest of a Coppa Italia Dilettanti in 2013-2014 as a national trophy. At the interregional level, it has won three Serie D championships (1974-1975, 1999-2000, and 2020-2021) and a Coppa Italia Dilettanti (C.N.D. Phase) in 1997-1998, as well as various regional category tournaments.

Club colors and logo

The team's colors are red and blue, while the symbol is the Canis lupus. Home games are played at the Stadio Nuovo Romagnoli.

In conclusion, Campobasso Football Club has a long history of great successes and some defeats, but has always pursued its passion and determination. Its presence in the Campobasso football landscape has been crucial and has marked the history of the city and its inhabitants. Go Campobasso!
