Tornimparte
Welcome to Tornimparte!
Hello everyone! Today, I'll talk to you about Tornimparte, a beautiful Italian municipality located in the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. Tornimparte has approximately 2,828 inhabitants and is made up of 22 villages. The municipal seat is located in the village of Villagrande, but the beauty of the territory extends throughout the area.
The beauty of the territory
The uniqueness of Tornimparte lies in its location, situated in the hinterland of the Abruzzo Apennines, in the southwestern sector of the Conca Aquilana. The municipality's territory is divided into a hilly foothill part, inhabited at an average altitude of 830 meters above sea level. Surrounded to the southwest, west, and northwest by the crest of the mountains Ruella (1,540 m), La Piaggia (1,637 m), and La Serra (1,599 m), and open to the north towards the rest of the Conca Aquilana, Tornimparte presents a variety of spectacular landscapes.
The mountainous part of the municipality is characterized by the presence of numerous beech and chestnut forests, interspersed with grazing areas and typical fauna of the Apennine mountains. Instead, the foothill part of the municipality is crossed by the Raio, a river that flows as a right tributary into the Aterno-Pescara in the territory of the municipality of L'Aquila.
The specific geological conformation of the foothill territory, mainly composed of tufaceous rock in the rocky areas, makes the territory resistant to earthquakes, and this has allowed Tornimparte to record relatively few damages, compared to neighboring areas, in the L'Aquila earthquake of 2009.
The climate
The climate in the area is typical of the innermost Apennine areas, characterized by pronounced continentalism with orographic inflows on western humid currents. In winter, the climate is generally cold, with snowfall from the medium mountain altitudes (1400 meters). Instead, during the summer season, the climate is predominantly dry, but the altitude manages to mitigate heat waves thanks to low relative humidity values.
The history of Tornimparte
Tornimparte has a long history dating back to the first centuries BC when the area belonged to the ancient Sabines. Over the centuries, the city has undergone different dominations: it was part of the Roman Empire and the Lombards (Longobardi Gastaldati di Forcona in the Duchy of Spoleto), then became a feud of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, passed into the hands of the Angevins until the 17th century, the Barberini in the 18th century, and finally to the Bourbons of the Two Sicilies in the 19th century, until the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.
