Discovering the fountains of Tornareccio

If you are traveling in the province of Chieti, we recommend taking a break in the picturesque village of Tornareccio to admire its beautiful fountains scattered throughout the area. In particular, let's take a look at the main fountains not to be missed during your visit.

The majestic Monumental Fountain

The Monumental Fountain of Tornareccio is located in Piazza Fontana, also known as Piano La Porta. This central-plan fountain is a double octagonal limestone basin, with the smaller radius upper basin over the lower one. With spouts located on each side of the basin, water flows into the lower basin. The main part of the fountain is represented by the upper basin shaped like a limestone chalice, from which water flows through an upward-facing jet. The Monumental Fountain of Tornareccio was built back in 1887 by Francesco Benedetti, a well-known engineer from Vasto, and was recently restored due to damage suffered during World War II.

The ancient watering trough

The watering trough of Tornareccio dates back to 1887 and is made of masonry and limestone. This fountain is located along Via del Carmine and is made up of a long and rectangular basin with a tripartite wall and bordered by pilasters. Water flows into the basin thanks to the three spouts, which are located one per side and decorated with beautiful flowers. Separating the wall is a frame that houses a pediment with two marble side arms.

The Fountain of San Rocco

The Fountain of San Rocco is located not far from the village church. It consists of a rectangular basin with an octagonal column in the center from which a jet of water flows directly into the basin. The column supports a jug-basin with metal handles, while a little further away there is another rectangular basin covered by a masonry roof.

Conclusion

In summary, if you find yourself in the province of Chieti, we recommend visiting the small village of Tornareccio to admire its splendid fountains. The Monumental Fountain, the watering trough, and the Fountain of San Rocco are just three of the countless treasures hidden among the village's streets. All that's left is to discover them all!
