Torino di Sangro

A brief introduction to Torino di Sangro

Hello everyone! Are you ready to discover some history and monuments of the wonderful city of Torino di Sangro? Located in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, this city has about 2,924 inhabitants and is rich in legends and monuments of interest.

The History of Torino di Sangro

The name of the city is still uncertain, but the most well-known legend tells of the inhabitants of Civita di Sangro, who had Sannitic origins and were included in the Frentani area. They fled from the Saracens in the 9th century, and were preceded by a bull that stopped beneath the ancient Tower where the villagers found refuge and where the new city was born, which was named Torino. Traces of the tower are still visible today at the rocky outcrop to the north. In the Middle Ages, the town was owned by the Abbey of Santo Stefano in Rivomaris in Casalbordino, and in the modern era, after the destruction of the abbey by the Turks, Torino was owned by the D'Avalos Marchesi di Vasto and then by the Carafa until 1806. In 1862, after the unification of Italy, the name was changed to Torino del Sangro to avoid postal confusion with Turin. The city played an important role during World War II and today is a summer tourist destination for the beach resorts on the coast of trabocchi.
