Origin of names

There are different theories about the name of Tonezza: it could derive from tofus, hard and rocky terrain, or from the Venetian term tonesar, which means thunder. According to other interpretations, the toponym would be of German origin (donnersberg, thunder mountain) or Latin (tofus, hard terrain). According to the writer Esule Sella, the name would instead derive from the term Montanea The-oneze, which means Land of Alders, a tree used in the past to make clogs, bobbins, and charcoal.

History

On the territory of Tonezza, some objects have been found that suggest prehistoric settlements, but the oldest dating is that of some Roman coins dating back two thousand years ago.

In the Middle Ages, the area was known as Montanea Thoneze or Silva Theoneze. During World War I, Tonezza was the scene of bloody clashes between the Italian and Austrian armies, culminating in the Battle of Tonezza in 1916.

After the war, the village was rebuilt and repopulated by its inhabitants and survivors of the war.
