Tonara

A city famous for nougat

Tonara is a Sardinian municipality in the province of Nuoro, known throughout the island and beyond for the production and trade of nougat. In fact, there is no time of the year when you cannot buy this artisanal and delicious product. The nougat trade has grown so large in the Italian market that Tonara is now known, especially during certain times of the year, as the "city of nougat". But Tonara is not just nougat, it is much more.

A green and wild territory

When you arrive in Tonara, you find yourself in a portion of Sardinia that is still wild and protected, surrounded by mountains rich in forests and crystalline rivers. The terrain is rich in flora and fauna, such as the Accipiter gentilis Arrigonii bird, which can also be admired thanks to the trekking organized by the Regional Park of the Seven Brothers. But the symbol of Tonara is without a doubt the Castanea Sativa tree, a tree that represents the pride and heritage of the entire country.

Tonara: among torrone, wild nature and ancient history.

The ancient history of Tonara

Tonara has ancient origins, this land has witnessed the passage of numerous peoples and tribes. In fact, among the most important testimonies of the pre-Nuragic period we find the funerary cave of Pitzu e' Toni and the Is Forreddos domus de janas, dating back to about 5000 years ago. This ancient civilization lived in this territory until the Roman era.

The four parts of Tonara

The territory of Tonara includes four neighborhoods: Arasulé, Toneri, Teliseri and Su Pranu. Each neighborhood has its own church, its own square, and its own history. Among the oldest neighborhoods we find Toneri, located in the highest part of the country, where honey was produced and bees were raised. Today, the neighborhood is much more lively and animated, especially during the patronal festivals.

The climate of Tonara

Tonara has an atypical climate compared to Sardinia, cooler and more humid. Winter can offer surprises with abundant snowfalls, while in summer you can enjoy cool and pleasant temperatures. This particular climate has allowed the flora and fauna of the territory to live long, remaining unchanged and protected.

The territory of Tonara offers many opportunities to live and savor the essence of unspoiled nature, from visiting chestnut woods to discovering numerous cycling trails.
