Tione di Trento

Tione di Trento: the heart of the Giudicarie valleys

Tione di Trento, also known as Tiòn in Trentino dialect or Tió in the local dialect, is an Italian municipality with a population of 3,649, located in the autonomous province of Trento. It is the most important center of the Giudicarie valleys.

History

Before the administrative reform of 1928, the municipality of Tione had a simpler name, Tione. After the territorial restructuring, the municipality underwent some modifications, including the addition of territories from the municipalities of Bolbeno, Saone, and Zuclo in 1928. In 1952, it underwent another detachment of territories for the reconstitution of the municipalities of Bolbeno and Zuclo.

Tione was one of the Seven Pievi of Giudicarie, which in the Middle Ages had some administrative autonomy under the dominion of the Prince Bishop of Trento. Even during the Habsburg period, these pievi continued to exist until the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) when they ceased all functions from 1918.

Tione di Trento was almost completely destroyed by a huge fire on August 21, 1895, which lasted for over a week.
