Tione degli Abruzzi

Tione degli Abruzzi: The small Abruzzo village

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Tione degli Abruzzi, a small village located in the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. With only 267 inhabitants, Tione is part of the "Comunità Montana Sirentina," but its history dates back to the Italic age!

History

Archaeological finds in the Santa Maria del Ponte area attest to the anthropization of the territory during the Italic age, thanks to the Vestini population. In the Middle Ages, the surrounding villages gathered in a main castle, that of Tione, while the villages of Goriano Valli, Pagliare, and Santa Maria del Ponte were founded.

Tione and Goriano participated in the foundation of L'Aquila in 1254, as attested by Buccio di Ranallo's "Cronache aquilane", contributing to the establishment of the Santa Giusta district, and the eastern wall still has the Porta Tione entrance.

In 1349, Tione was added to the diocese of L'Aquila by the will of Pope Clement VII; with a notarial deed of March 15, 1393, the construction of the Castle "with walls, moats, watchtowers and fortifications" was ordered in the San Nicola area. In 1498, the village was in conflict with Rocca di Mezzo, and the fief wanted by Philip of Chalon, Prince of Orange, was granted to Luigi di Benagalzer in 1529.

Tione was owned by Giovan Giuseppe Cantelmo, Duke of Popoli (Italy) (1560), and was sold by the Royal Court to Muzio Rivera of L'Aquila, who became baron of the castle in 1572. In 1587, Tione was passed to Ortenzio del Pezzo, in 1669 it belonged to Clemente Sannerio, Duke of San Demetrio ne' Vestini, and finally belonged to the Quinzi and Cocco families until 1806.

The nearby village of Santa Maria del Ponte became a fraction as early as 1294, in 1529 it was granted to Ferdinando Figueroa, then to Pietro di Pietropaolo, the Masci (1622), and the Cappelletti of Rieti (1631). The village of Goriano Valli belonged to Sichenale and Ruggero in 1185, and financially belonged to L'Aquila's property in 1269.

Tione degli Abruzzi: history and symbols of the small town in Abruzzo.

Symbols

The emblem of the municipality of Tione degli Abruzzi was approved by the decree of the President of the Republic on March 7, 2005. The symbol represents the Civic Tower in black on a silver field, the castle, the olive tree, and the shell, which is the emblem of the district where the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Ponte was documented in 1209.

From 1861 to today

With territorial redistribution from 1806 to 1860, Tione was part of Abruzzo Ulteriore Secondo, in the "District of L'Aquila," incorporated into the San Demetrio district. From 1861 onwards, it became an autonomous municipality, changing its name to "Tione degli Abruzzi" in 1928 to distinguish it from the homonymous Trento municipality, and included the villages of Goriano, Pagliare, and Santa Maria del Ponte in its administration, the latter only in 1954, as it previously belonged to the neighboring municipality of Fontecchio.

Have you ever heard of Tione degli Abruzzi? I hope I have managed to help you discover some new curiosities about this small Abruzzo village!
