The Province of Asti: History and Geography

The Province of Asti borders the Metropolitan City of Turin in the northwest, Alessandria province in the east, Liguria (Savona province) in the south, and Cuneo province in the west.
But the history of the Province of Asti dates back a long time! The first records of this province go back to the Royal Letters Patent of S.A.R. Carlo Emanuele I from November 22, 1620. Initially, the province was formed by 42 municipalities, many of which no longer belong to the province currently.
In the subsequent years, the Province of Asti expanded to reach 87 municipalities, some of which were part of the Alba territory. From 1797 to 1814, the Province of Asti became part of the French Empire and then reintegrated into the administrative division of Alessandria.
But the real revival of the Province of Asti took place in 1935 when Mussolini reinstated the province with an area of 105 municipalities.

After the war, in the years 1947-1949, the Province of Asti expanded its area by incorporating 120 municipalities. This decision was made to give autonomous status to municipalities that, during the fascist period, had been aggregated to larger communal realities.
But not everything was rosy for the Province of Asti. Over the years, the province has suffered numerous floods, including those in 1948, 1968, and 1994. These natural disasters caused extensive damage to the province and unfortunately, in some cases, also fatalities.
The Municipalities of the Province of Asti
Today, the Province of Asti has 118 municipalities. Some of the best-known municipalities are the gateway to the Langhe, such as Nizza Monferrato and Canelli, which are famous for their fine wines.
Another famous municipality in the Province of Asti is Costigliole d'Asti, the birthplace of poet Cesare Pavese. Asti, the provincial capital, is famous for its Palio festival, held every year on the third Saturday of September.
