The history of Tiglieto

Tiglieto has a rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire. There was already an agro-pastoral settlement known as Civitacula in the area where Tiglieto now stands, which demonstrates the presence of stable settlements in this stretch of the Orba valley for several centuries before the construction of the Cistercian abbey, now known as the Tiglieto Abbey, built by the Cistercians in 1120.

The current name seems to be related to the ancient spread of the Tilia, a rare tree in the surroundings of Tiglieto, together with the Quercus Petraea, one of the main components of the woods that extended in the current plain of the Abbey. In the sixteenth century, Tiglieto increased its economic importance thanks to new road communications that connected the area of Ovada and the Lower Piedmont to the Ligurian Sea.

On July 12, 1583, soldiers from Guglielmo Gonzaga, Sovereign of Mantua and Marchesato del Monferrato, invaded the territory of Tiglieto with the aim of taking possession of the lands and imposing customs duties on goods. The invasion led to a series of political reactions, including the sending of Genoese soldiers, who managed to push back the Mantuan soldiers, leading to the reconstruction of new fortifications and customs houses.

Conclusions

All in all, Tiglieto is a small and charming town that offers its visitors a unique experience of natural beauty, history and local tradition. Whether you are looking for enchanting views, mountain hikes or simply want to spend a relaxing day surrounded by greenery, Tiglieto is the right place for you!
