The territory of Tiggiano extends between 0 and 141 meters above sea level and borders to the north with Tricase, to the west with Alessano, to the south with Corsano and to the east with the Adriatic Sea. The Municipality is part of the Union of the Municipalities of Terra di Leuca and of the Inter-municipal Consortium Capo Santa Maria di Leuca, which adheres to the "Authentic Italian Villages" association.

For just over 10 years, part of the Tiggiano territory has been part of the Otranto Coast - Santa Maria di Leuca and Bosco di Tricase Park, established by the Puglia Region to safeguard the eastern coast of Salento. Here you will find valuable architectural assets and important animal and plant species. The Le Chiuse wood, located on the hill behind the coast, mainly presents a vegetation of holm oak and oak, with Pistacia terebinthus bushes.

The climate of Tiggiano is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot humid summers. In general, the average annual temperature is around +18.4°C. June and September are the best months to enjoy the sea and Salento beaches, when the temperature is mild but still warm enough to dive into the water. Precipitation shows a minimum in spring-summer and a peak in autumn-winter, with an annual average of about 570 mm. However, from the beginning of May, the rains become rare and the Salento spring offers unique colors.

The origin of the name Tiggiano

The toponym Tiggiano could be a predial and derive from the Latin person name "Tegius" (or "Tibius") with the addition of the suffix -"ano" to indicate belonging. In any case, the name of the Municipality is far from being the most important aspect of the place.
